FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP

NAMI Dauphin County members and staff provide information on community resources; we discuss what works and what doesn’t; we share frustrations and successes; and we help each other learn how to advocate for our family members. We advise families of their children’s rights under Federal, State and local laws. We learn the symptoms and the effective treatments for mental illness. As family members we learn practical coping skills.

In the past, not only was there a lack of adequate services but some clinicians viewed the family as the cause of brain disorder and as a result, often turned their backs on the families’ stress, isolation and frustration.

Until recently, families of persons suffering from a brain disorder often had to cope with a lack of support in their efforts to help their ill family member.

Families with relatives suffering from a brain disorder no longer suffer in silence and isolation. We have joined together to cope with the feelings of stress isolation and pain.

In Dauphin County the support group movement has been expanding steadily and is a strong advocate for those impacted by mental illness.

There is hope for Recovery.
